Why our bread comes from Hill Top

A small note on the bakery in Caversham that supplies our sourdough, and why we send the toastie press their way.

If you have eaten anything on toast in here, it came on bread from Hill Top, a tiny bakery in Caversham run by two people who get up at four in the morning so that we, and you, do not have to.

We tried for a while to do our own bread. We have a kitchen. We have an oven. We even have a baker. But the bread Hill Top makes is better than ours, and at a price that lets us focus on the food we are good at.

This is the rule we keep landing on: if someone nearby does the thing better than us, we buy it from them. It is what allows the kitchen to stay focused on the rest of the menu, and what makes the area we are in a slightly better place to run a small food business in.

If you want to try a loaf, we have one at the counter most days. Whole loaves to take home, if there are any left by lunch.
